Our beach clean in Falmouth for Surfers Against Sewage
our autumn beach clean in falmouth
In collaboration with Sharp’s Brewery and Surfers Against Sewage, our Autumn Beach Clean was hugely successful. More than twenty volunteers from Falmouth and further afield braved the cold and Cornish drizzle to attend. We had a lot of fun along the way and also collected ten massive bags of plastic waste! Amongst the usual washed-up plastic were more unusual finds including our very own Greenbank crockery from the 1960s. As well as this, volunteers found an American football, a lightbulb, an oar and a soggy beach towel.
Free pints all round
Sponsored by Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery, participants over the age of 18 received a free pint of Working Boat ale at the end of the clean as a thanks for their efforts. The clean was a part of Surfers Against Sewage’s ‘Autumn Beach Clean’ campaign which is the largest and most effective volunteer beach cleaning project in the UK.
Our Managing Director of The Greenbank, Ben Young said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all that came to last week’s beach clean. It was so encouraging to welcome so many volunteers and collect ten huge bags of waste. It was a real community effort for Falmouth, with lots of familiar faces, staff and tourists alike all getting involved.”
“We are very grateful that the team at Sharp’s are able to support us time and time again. We’re on such a huge drive at The Greenbank and The Working Boat to eradicate the use of plastics throughout the hotel and to do our bit for our environment.”
It wasn’t long until the tide starting to creep its way back onto Greenbank beach. It really is impressive that you can collect so much plastic waste in a short amount of time. The Greenbank team hope to remove all the plastic from Greenbank beach. However, it is always an ongoing challenge, which is why we need your help! Fancy taking part in our next beach clean? A huge thank you to all our volunteers for their help. We already can’t wait for our next beach clean in Falmouth which will be held in spring.
