What’s On In September 2019: Cornwall’s Diary

As we wave farewell to summer, September brings with it the turn of the seasons. Notoriously, Cornwall benefits from fine weather in September, and this month is looking no different!

Our suggestions for September are to embrace the fresh season as a time to really appreciate the beauty all around. Get involved in local events and savour spending time with your loved ones. Here are the dates to note down in your diaries for fun events in Cornwall happening in September…

4th september: TREBAH GARDEN HYDRANGEA WALK AND TALK, falmouth

Where: 15 minute drive from The Greenbank

Two acres of hydrangeas surround the picturesque Mallard Pond at one of Falmouth’s most popular gardens. Trebah’s Hydrangea Valley will be welcoming a very special guest in September. Archivist, Nicky Wharton, will be hosting a walk and talk on the beautiful blooms. Advising on the cultivation of hydrangeas and selection of the right varieties for your own garden, the walk commences at 10:30am from the Visitor Centre.

6th SEPTEMBER – 1ST NOVEMBER: LIZARDART AUTUMN EXHIBITION, Stableyard gallery, helston

Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank

Immerse yourself in autumn artwork at LizardArt’s autumn exhibition at the Stableyard Gallery in the Helston area. With collections from 15 artists, this show of new work is sure to inspire any art-lover. See something you like? Take it home that day to hang in pride of place in your home. After you’ve perused the artwork, why not explore the rest of Trelowarren Stableyard, and stop in for a bite to eat at the New Yard Restaurant?

7th september: REDRUTH INTERNATIONAL MINING AND PASTY FESTIVAL, redruth

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

Endorsed by The Cornish Pasty Association, this year sees Redruth host the 8th annual International Mining and Pasty Festival. A day of family entertainment and fun awaits, including market stalls, ‘make your own pasty’ challenge, as well as street music to tap your toes to. Mining and pasties go hand in hand and are a massive part of the county’s heritage – in other words, you couldn’t get much more Cornish than this local festival.

8th september: WORLD BELLY BOARDING CHAMPIONSHIPS, perranporth beach

Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank

Wander down to Perranporth beach for the World Belly Boarding Championships in September. Over 200 people will be competing in a series of races on the waves. This nostalgic event celebrates surfing heritage at the same time as raising money for the RNLI. If you want to take part, it costs £16 to register and includes an event T-shirt.

12th – 15th september: ORVIS UK SALTWATER FLY FISHING FESTIVAL, st mawes

Where: 20 minute ferry ride from The Greenbank’s pontoon

The fifth UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival will be hosted across the harbour in St Mawes. With lots of beaches and rocky areas, keen fishers can tackle new skills and enjoy refreshments in a variety of pubs around St Mawes.  Put your watercraft to the test, and meet like-minded people along the way.

13th – 15th september: NEWQUAY FISH FESTIVAL, newquay

Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank

There’s no denying that fishing and seafood are at the heart of Cornish history. Newquay have dedicated an entire festival to all things fish. Visit the town and enjoy chef demos, delicious seafood, live music, and lots of fascinating stories about the Cornish fishing heritage.

13th – 15th september: THE LITTLE ORCHARD CIDER AND MUSIC FESTIVAL, healey’s cyder farm, penhallow

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

If you’re looking for a family-friendly, quintessentially Cornish festival (and you love cider) – Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival should be on your radar. Camping and glamping is available at the country party scene, located on Healey’s Cyder Farm. Jump into fun at the farm, with live music, a silent disco, secret cider walks and lots of cider tasting.

14th – 18th september: ST IVES SEPTEMBER FESTIVAL, st ives

Where: 50 minutes drive from The Greenbank

The St Ives September Festival has been a tradition of one of Cornwall’s most popular tourist destinations since 1978. The 15 day event sees St Ives celebrate the success of the summer, offering a wide range of music, arts and literature for visitors. Expect shanty singers, classical choirs and jazz music to name just a few. Art workshops and craft classes, walks, talks, theatre, comedy, cabaret and poetry will all be taking place. With such an inspiring landscape, it’s the perfect location to try your hand at a new talent, or chill out with exceptional entertainment.

20th – 21st september: THE LITTLE BIG GIG, henry’s campsite, the lizard

Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank

A three day festival set in the most southerly part of the country, The Little Big Gig in The Lizard is a music and ale festival to celebrate local talent and all things Cornish. Musicians can bring along their instruments and join in with the festivities, with jamming sessions and workshops over the three days. If you don’t play, simply come along to enjoy the wonderful sounds of all the performers at this party on the peninsula.

27th – 29th september: TRURO FOOD FESTIVAL, truro

Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank

Foodies of Cornwall, you do not want to miss out on this tasty event. The sweet smells of fabulous Cornish cooking will waft through the streets of Truro at the end of September, as Truro Food Festival gets underway. Head to Lemon Quay for gourmet street food, local restaurants offering chef demos and cookery workshops, live music and entertainment, and lots of samples and delectable treats. Simon George, the Head Chef at our sister hotel The Alverton, will be among the many chefs cooking up a storm, so make sure to pay him a visit to try his legendary seafood jambalaya.
