THE GREENBANK’S porter…

Our porter local to Cornwall, Calum, has grown up nearby The Greenbank his whole life. A resident to Falmouth, Calum went to Falmouth School and previously studied Sport at A Level. Calum has been working as a porter at The Greenbank for three years now and is an integral part of our team.

Calum first applied to The Greenbank as he had a mutual friend with our Head Porter, Tom. “I really liked the sound of the role. This has been my first job and I’ve loved every minute of it so far.” Calum is currently studying a Hospitality Supervisor course at Truro and Penwith College and wants to work his way up in the hospitality trade. Calum’s dream role would be to become a Hotel Manager.

WHy do you enjoy working at the greenbank?

One of my favourite things about working here is that I get to meet guests from all over the world – there’s so many interesting people and stories. I’ve made lots of friends working here. My job role is also extremely varied. I love this because it means that no day is the same and I also get to work with all the different teams around the hotel. I have to say, I also really enjoy the staff parties – they’re definitely a highlight.

WHAT CORNISH DELICACY IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

It has to be the humble Cornish pasty. My favourite is definitely a Rowes chicken pasty. You’re not Cornish if you don’t like Rowes!

Where in cornwall would you recommend to guests as a must-see?

Being a porter I do get asked this question a lot. I’d have to choose St Michael’s Mount, as there’s nothing else in Cornwall like it. Whenever I recommend it to a guest they always return really impressed. It’s such a monumental landscape. It’s also really exciting when you go to visit at high-tide and plan a boat trip over there, as it makes the experience so much more special.

Finally, what makes falmouth so special to you?

I’ve lived here my whole life, so for that reason it’s incredibly special to me. I’ve been so lucky to grow up in a coastal area where I have all my friends and family around me. I’d also have to say I think it’s special for how inclusive it is. Falmouth is welcoming to all. It’s a vibrant town where you get to meet so many amazing characters.
