What’s on in August 2018: Cornwall’s Diary

From family-friendly activities and music festivals, to comedy, symphonies, gin-themed nights and the famous RAF Red Arrows, there’s something for everyone this August in Cornwall. So grab your family and friends and explore what Cornwall has to offer…

30th July – 2nd September: Pirate School, the National Maritime Museum

Where: 15 minute walk from The Greenbank

Join the Maritime Museum for their pirate school this summer. Learn the ropes with interactive shows by Rattlebox Theatre, meet two of the toughest pirates around and find out about the facts and fictions behind real-life pirates of today. With maps leading to hidden treasure and stations to make your own parrot, it promises plenty of fun filled hours for all the family to enjoy.

31st July – 10th August: St Endellion Summer Music Festival

Where: 1 hour 20 minute drive from The Greenbank

Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2018, internationally famous festival began life when a musical priest invited a group of college friends down to help him renovate St Endellion’s derelict rectory. Over the years it grew from friends putting on small scale fundraising concerts to include an orchestra and a chorus. It provides classical music lovers orchestras and a chorus of 75, with guest artists, music from Broadway and late night brass bands.

31st July – 28th August: Trevithick Tuesday, east pool mine

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

Every Tuesday during the summer holidays, expect a day for all the family full of science and craft based activities. Learn all about the giant steam engines, have a go at making a goose feather fuse, giant bubbles and the ever so popular ‘Great Egg Drop Challenge’. Fun for all the family, it’s not one to miss this month!

31st July – 28th August: Groundwork | Lightbox, helston

Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank

A festival of free activities and entertainment for all the family, Groundwork are hosting a specially constructed light box projection space in Helston this month. Workshops will run every Tuesday, so why not drop into Helston Museum to make shadow puppets, props, miniature worlds and wind up theatres before heading to CAST and bringing them to life in the Light Box animation studio? There’s so much more to do at the CAST studios depending on the day, including animations, cinema viewings, storytelling and dress up.

1st – 5th August: Circus Funtasia, Falmouth

Where: right on our doorstep!

Back by popular demand, Circus Funtasia will be performing at 10 venues across Cornwall this summer. Coming to Falmouth at the beginning of the month, expect fire breathing stunts, motorbike globe riders, wire walking, hula hoops, knife juggling, daredevil ‘wheel of death’ acrobats and beautiful aerial acts, which have earned them a five star rating from the public. Going to miss Falmouth’s performances? Not to worry – head to Wadebridge, Penzance, Helston, Truro, Bodmin, Hayle, St Austell, Pool or Bude.

1st – 31st August: Red Panda Ranger Month, Paradise Park

Where: 40 minute drive from The Greenbank

This fun and educational experience of becoming a Red Panda Ranger gives you the opportunity to come face to face with two of these wonderful animals. You’ll be able to hand-feed, stroke and take photos of them, and maybe one will even sit on your lap! For every experience booked a donation will be given to the Red Panda Network – a charity committed to the conservation of wild red pandas and their habitat through the education and empowerment of local communities.

1st – 31st August: Myths and Legends from the Sea, St Michael’s Mount

Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank

Inspired by the stories of the mount, a crafty hub of activity will be provided by ‘Great Scott! Adventures Outdoors’ on the dairy lawn every Tuesday during August, to create objects and artworks that are linked to tales of mythical boatmen and ancient fisherman. Make a willow fish or design your own nautical flag, where each activity is connected to the mount stories that are performed every day during the school holidays.

5th August: American and Classic Car Show, Mount Edgcumbe

Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank

A family day out full of craft stalls, a car boot fair, amusements, refreshments, live music and a licenced bar, as well as over 500 American and classic cars to see. All of the proceeds will go to the Cornwall Hospice Care and Friends of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Visitors will also be able to tour the house and enjoy the formal gardens and walks.

The Greenbank and our sister hotel The Alverton will be hosting a series of gourmet events this summer. Join us for six delicious courses that highlight summertime in Cornwall, by bringing the very best ingredients together from our chefs, and combining live open-air theatre cooking with traditional kitchen techniques. Dates include 9th August at The Alverton, 23rd August at The Greenbank, 6th September at The Alverton, and 20th September at The Greenbank.

7th – 25th August: Kneehigh present The Dancing Frog, the lost gardens of heligan

Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank

The Dancing Frog features a team including musician and early Kneehigh member Tim Dalling, his daughter Ailsa, local performer Jenny Beare, puppeteer extraordinaire Sarah Wright, as well as Director Mike Shepherd, who directs this delightful tale of hope, heart and hip-hoppity adventure based on the classic children’s book by Quentin Blake. You won’t want to miss this performance.

8th August – 13th August: Boardmasters Festival, newquay

Where: 50 minutes from the hotel

This surf, skate and music festival features the best in action sports and gives festival-goers the hottest surf and music combination in the UK. During the day, head towards the Corona Sunsets Stage for the ultimate chill-out area decked with hammocks and, of course, Corona. As the sun starts to set on the Cornish coastline, the stage will begin to light up, providing an unforgettable summer party with music from George Ezra, The Chemical Brothers, Catfish and The Bottlemen, and more.

10th – 19th August: Falmouth Week

Where: right on our doorstep!

Falmouth Week has grown into the largest sailing regatta in the south west with more than 450 yachts racing over eight days. Whilst you’re watching the sailing on the water, there are many activities on shore to keep everyone entertained. Experience Falmouth’s culture and expect street theatre, workshops, fireworks, carnivals, the RAF Red Arrows and more. The Working Boat will be hosting a series of events throughout the week, where you’ll be able to sip a cocktail or two, tuck into our delicious barbeque, and enjoy a host of live music.

11th August: Falmouth Gin Festival, greenbank hotel

Where: right on our doorstep!

We’ll be hosting the first ever Falmouth Gin Festival this year! Sample award-winning products from the likes of Curio, Tarquin’s, Agnes Arber, Salcombe Gin, Regal Rogue Vermouth and Trevethan, then kick back whilst having informal chats with our gin suppliers. Lounge around sipping gin cocktails served in our bar, share a tasting board of nibbles with your friends, then dance the night away to your favourite tunes. Festival-goers can expect a whole host of performances from local singer songwriters including acclaimed artists Tom Baker and Patrick Gilbert.

14th – 25th August: SCRAWW, Trebah Garden, falmouth

Where: 15 minute drive from The Greenbank

A feather fuelled immersive event like no other. This family friendly event will have you wandering through the gardens and into Persian poetry. Audiences will don ‘silent disco style’ headphones, where they will join a flock and put on their feathers as they get led through the beautiful surroundings, experiencing live performance blended by Max Pappenheim’s immersive theatrical musical score.

17th – 19th August: Cornish Steam and Country Fair

Where: 20 minute drive from The Greenbank

This traditional country fair will include almost one hundred full size and miniature steam engines from all over the country. Get up close to the stunning engines and witness what they were designed to do. The fair also includes a model and craft marquee, vintage cars, tractors, steam cars, military vehicles and much more. Brass bands, choirs and Morris dancers will be providing their talented entertainment, with an old time fun fair to keep kids both big and small amused!

17th August: The Return of The Secret Gin Garden, scorrier house

Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank

From the creators of The Great Estate Festival comes a decadent one-night celebration of enticing beverages, live music, DJs, burlesque and fire dancing. Nestled in the walled gardens of Scorrier House, this intimate experience immerses all those involved into a secluded world of enchanting performances. Wild Wine Club will once again bring their expert knowledge of food and drink pairings, this time combining exotic gins with the finest local Cornish produce.

25th August: Swim FestivalPolkerris

Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank

A mass participation of open water sea swimming, this swim festival is a great chance to try a plunge of a particular distance. And if you’re feeling particularly fit, strong and ready for an extra challenge, you could swim two or even all three distances! Offering a choice of 1km, 2km or 3km, this challenge is great fun for all levels of swimmers.

31st August: Cornish Summertime and Steam, Bodmin and Wenford Railway

Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank

Bodmin and Wenford Railway are hosting an evening of food and entertainment celebrating Cornish summertime with heritage steam travel and home grown produce. Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen will be bringing along friends from Sharp’s Brewery, Polgoon Vineyard, and Tarquin’s gin, to offer a ‘totally Cornish’  menu. This will include canapes and a three course meal.
