What’s on in April: Cornwall’s Diary
April is full to the brim with events in Cornwall. Discover our diary round-up here – from foodie festivals and folk music, to gardens and Easter treats…
1ST – 2ND APRIL: CORNWALL SPRING FLOWER SHOW, BOCONNOC HOUSE, LOSTWITHIEL
Where: an hour from The Greenbank
Cornwall’s answer to the Chelsea Flower Show. Flower power is something you can’t miss in our county, with gardens crammed with a profusion of colourful plants. Even in winter the climate is so mild that buds start to appear in the hedgerows in January, so by the time spring comes that passion for gardening has awakened into a spate of flower festivals. This two-day event takes place in the magnificent grounds of Boconnoc House, an 18th century mansion owned by the Fortescue family.
4TH – 13TH APRIL: GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM AT THE MINACK
Where: an hour from us
See one of the most uplifting stories ever written at the iconic Minack Theatre. Set during the build-up of the Second World War ’Goodnight Mister Tom’ follows the journey of a young boy, William Beech, as he is evacuated from London to the idyllic English countryside & housed with reclusive Mister Tom and his dog Sammy.
UNTIL 17TH APRIL: FALMOUTH SPRING FESTIVAL
Where: all around the town
This vibrant community event is the first main Falmouth festival of the year. It brings an explosion of early colour to the town whilst celebrating our open spaces with activities like ‘paint the town yellow’ day (where 25,000 daffodils are handed out), spring cleans, rock-pooling sessions, a folk and cider fayre, and a host of guided walks.
UNTIL 17TH APRIL: EASTER FUN AT THE EDEN PROJECT
Where: 50 minute drive from us
A golden egg hunt, storytelling, a new wobbly rope bridge in the rainforest treetops and a new Australian garden are some of the many delights awaiting visitors to the Eden Project this month. The home of the famous biomes is going even more ‘egg-streme’ for Easter, with a whole basket full of seasonal delights.
7TH – 17TH APRIL: THE WILD SPRING HARE, TEHIDY WOODS
Where: 30 minute drive from the hotel
An immersive Easter adventure by the weird and wonderful crew at Rogue Theatre. Wild Spring Hare is an eruption of imagination and possibility, a twisting of paths and collection of tales. Join the fun deep in the woods of Tehidy North Cliffs for an Easter trail like no other! Chocolate Easter treats for all, or head to the woodland café for hot cross buns.
21ST – 23RD APRIL 2017: PORTHLEVEN FOOD FESTIVAL
Where: 30 minutes from The Greenbank
A free weekend of Cornish food, beer and bands in the little harbour town of Porthleven. Fill your shopping bags, eat yourself silly, and drink until you are merry. Expect over 90 food and craft stalls surrounding the harbour and all day cookery demonstrations from some of the UK’s biggest names.
22ND – 23RD APRIL: CHARITY GARDEN OPENING, TREGOTHNAN, TRURO
Where: 40 minute drive from the hotel
Tregothnan’s private gates will open for one weekend only to give an insight into the workings of the largest historic garden in Cornwall. Experience the unequalled diversity of trees, rare collections, sweeping vistas and peaceful secluded groves on the banks of River Fal. Children go free and dogs on leads welcome.
29TH APRIL: TREVITHICK DAY, CAMBORNE
Where: 30 minutes from us
Local engineering genius and inventor Richard Trevithick gets the recognition he deserves today, as Camborne celebrates its importance as a major player in Cornwall’s former mining industry. The streets play host to local trade stalls, choirs, brass bands, clowns, buskers, musicians and dancers, including hundreds of children from local schools traditionally dressed as Bal Maidens and Miners. You can also expect live theatre, an impressive convoy of vintage vehicles, spluterring steam engines, and fairground rides.
