What’s On in July 2018: Cornwall’s Diary

It’s not all about the beach this month, because as ever we are full to the brim with events in Cornwall. Discover our July diary round-up here – from steam fairs, festivals and family runs, to theatre, regattas and agricultural shows, there’s something for everyone…

3rd – 22nd July: 100: UnEarth, Lost Gardens of Heligan

Where: 50 minutes from The Greenbank

Looking at the devastating aftermath of conflict, 100: UnEarth tells the homecoming stories of those who fight and live through war. Taking inspiration from the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, 100: UnEarth has a love story at its heart, exploring grief and tragedy with a deeply moving ending. An outdoor theatre experience like no other, it promises to keep you gripped from the start.

6th – 7th July: Rock Oyster Festival, Wadebridge

Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank

Known to be north Cornwall’s favourite festival, this event takes place at Roskear Farm near Wadebridge. Located right on the famous Camel trail, arriving by foot or bike has never been so easy. Expect to experience music, energy, eccentricity and charm with a taste of the coast – oysters, mussels and other delicious local produce.

6th – 8th July: Live in The Wyldes, Bude

Where: 1 hour 30 minutes from The Greenbank

Nestled within a tree-lined valley in north Cornwall, The Wyldes site lies just a few miles from the beach. Entering into its second year, after a very successful launch the previous summer, The Wyldes will host a series of one-day live music events where Brit Award-winning singer Paloma Faith will take to the main stage as one of the first headline acts to be announced. More artists are to be released soon.

8th July: Merlin Family Fun Run, Trelissick

Where: 20 minutes from The Greenbank

A fun run like no other. Starting in front of the National Trust property Trelissick House, this off-road race around private parkland is open to anyone who wishes to walk, jog or run 1.5km or 3km. Fancy dress is encouraged, where there will be prizes (for both adults and children!) and each runner will receive a medal, goody bag, bananas and water at the end of each run.

12th July: Paulos Circus Creating Memories Tour, Newquay

Where: 45 minutes from The Greenbank

From breath-taking stunts and laugh-out-loud comedy to beautiful artistry and world-class acts, the Paulos family have created a show to give you ever lasting memories. Performing in Newquay for four weeks, make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to relive your younger years and go to the circus!

13th – 15th July: Tropical Pressure Festival, porthtowan

Where: 25 minutes from The Greenbank

Bringing a packed programme of live music, food, dance and culture to Porthtowan, this exciting and inspiring festival will feature top quality live acts from Colombia, Brazil, Kenya, Cuba, Jamaica and the UK. This festival is a family-friendly event, with a dedicated kid’s creative zone running all weekend, and a busy programme of free workshops and activities.

14th July: Liskeard Agricultural Show, Liskeard

Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank

The Liskeard Agricultural Show is one of the biggest in the south west, with a wide selection of high quality entries in the large animal classes. Not only can you see these classes but you can also experience the smaller animal shows, companion dog shows, donkeys, poultry, and flower arrangements. Competing for that all important ‘best in show’, the event also features equestrian activities and shopping areas, as well as a range of entertainment throughout the day.

16th July: Stithians Agricultural Show, Stithians

Where: 20 minutes from The Greenbank

Held annually since the early 1800s, the show originally started as a competition between local parishioners to see who could grow the best vegetables, breed the greatest horses and raise the finest cattle. Today the purpose built showground provides a full day out for the whole family. Expect musical entertainment, food courts, shopping opportunities, craft stalls, fairgrounds, animals of all sorts, dog shows and cookery competitions, plus so much more!

18th June – 15th July: The Trench, Bodmin

Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank

Follow in the footsteps of local Cornishmen who fought in the First World War in this immersive experience at Bodmin Railway Station. Take on a real soldier’s identity and board the steam train, which will take you to a replica WW1 trench for you to experience the chaos of battle. Set to commemorate the men of Bodmin and further afield who gave their lives during the First World War, this event is more than just a play but an experience that will stay with you forever.

21st – 27th July: Charlestown Regatta Week, Charlestown

Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank

An annual tradition bringing together the local community, residents and visitors alike, to enjoy a variety of live music, pasty demonstrations, competitions, watersports, raft races and classic favourites such as the flora dance processions and the grand carnival. Aiming to blend well-known traditions with contemporary events, this regatta week is organised by a team of volunteers who aim to fundraise in support of local community projects and charities.

26th July – 6th September: Cornish Summer Menu Tasting, The Greenbank & The Alverton

We’re excited to announce that The Greenbank and our sister hotel The Alverton will be hosting a series of gourmet events this summer. Join us for six delicious courses that highlight summertime in Cornwall, by bringing the very best ingredients together from our chefs, and combining live open-air theatre cooking with traditional kitchen techniques. 26th – 29th July: Port Eliot Festival, St Germans

Where: 1 hour 20 minutes from The Greenbank

Situated on the rolling park and woodland of the ancient estate at St Germans, Port Eliot Festival is the original free-ranging festival of ideas, which brings a collection of artists, musicians, writers, comedians, performers and makers together to one of the most beautiful corners of the country. It takes its lead from the much-loved legendary Elephant Fayre Festival, which took place on the same site thirty years before.

27th – 29th July: Boconnoc Steam Fair, Lostwithiel

Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank

This old fashioned steam extravaganza is held annually in the magnificent grounds of the Boconnoc Estate by the Liskeard Steam and Vintage Club. Expect entertainment for the whole family, with vintage vehicles, full size and miniature steam engines, motorcycles, old tractors, sleek classic cars, military vehicles and so much more to explore. Why not travel in old fashioned style and experience life on the popular steam hauled trailer around the showground? There will also be trade stands, fun fairs and a fully licensed beer tent for all to enjoy.

27th – 29th July: Leopallooza Festival, Bude

Where: 1 hour 30 minutes from The Greenbank

Bringing international chart-topping stars to the rolling hills of north Cornwall, Leopallooza hosts a string of established musicians, up and coming artists and hilarious comedians. Approaching its 12th year, the festival site is almost unrecognisable from its early days but their ethos has stayed the same. Run by the same small team who work year-round to create, curate and run each Leopallooza, you’ll be in good hands for an unforgettable music experience.
