What’s on in May: Cornwall’s Diary
May brings with it mellow sunshine, two bank holidays, and events in Cornwall by the bucket load. Discover our diary round-up here – from dancing and dining to art, literature and one of our favourite Falmouth festivals.
1st MAY: MAY DAY FESTIVAL, ST IVES
Where: 45 minutes from The Greenbank
Celebrating the end of winter is a tradition that stretches back hundreds of years in Cornwall, and St Ives rekindled its connection to the past when it revived its May Day Festival a few years ago. At midday the May Queen and King will be chosen, and horn-blowers will herald the start of spring. At 1pm there’s a lively parade with May pole dances, traditional Cornish dancing and music.
6TH MAY: FLORA DAY, HELSTON
Where: 20 minutes from us
The town will be decked out with bluebells, gorse and laurel leaves gathered from the surrounding countryside. Dancing begins at 7am and not long after the Hal-an-Tow (a boisterous mummers’ play featuring St George slaying the dragon) begins, cheered on by the crowd. The evening dance concludes the dancing, starting at 5pm. There's a carnival atmosphere from dawn to well into the night, with packed pubs, stalls and a fairground.
UNTIL 7TH MAY: BLUEBELL FESTIVAL, ENYS GARDEN
Where: 8 minute drive or 50 minute walk from us
Visit Enys Garden near Penryn to see their famous bluebell meadow – a sure sign that spring is finally here! The gardens are open from 11am to 5pm every day during the festival, from 29th April until 7th May. There will also be an art exhibition inside Enys House, showcasing the work of local artists.
