What’s on in October: Cornwall’s Diary

Although the evenings are getting a little darker and we’re digging out our hats and scarves, there’s still plenty of things to do in Cornwall this October. With everything from beers by the barrelful and seafood celebrations, to spooky tales, theatre, and apple pressing – we’ve rounded up our favourite events in Falmouth and further afield.

1ST OCTOBER: EDEN BEER FESTIVAL, NEAR ST AUSTELL

Where: 50 minute drive from us
The iconic Eden Project’s annual beer festival will provide an evening of beery fun, in partnership with St Austell Brewery. Tuck into the mouth-watering festival food menus, toe tap to live music, and get merry on the huge range of speciality beers and ciders.

Can’t make this one? Check out Truro’s very own Oktoberfest on 7th and 8th October. Grab your lederhosen and tankard, and head to this raucous celebration of Bavarian culture.

1ST – 2ND OCTOBER: APPLE WEEKEND, TRELISSICK GARDEN

Where: 20 minute drive from us
Discover this gorgeous woodland garden hidden on the banks of the Fal River for a weekend’s celebration of the Cornish apple orchards. As the leaves fall and the season changes, it’s the perfect time to take in the impressive display of autumn colour. The restored ancient apple press will be in use pressing apples from the orchard, so you can be the first to taste this year’s fresh apple juice.

13TH – 16TH OCTOBER: FALMOUTH OYSTER FESTIVAL, EVENTS SQUARE, FALMOUTH

Where: 20 minute walk or 10 minute drive from The Greenbank
Celebrating the start of the oyster dredging season, Falmouth Oyster Festival will be celebrating its 20th year with a big birthday bash! Expect a packed programme of cookery demos, Working Boat race, sea shanties, dancing and seafood. Freshly shucked oysters will of course be the star of the show, and they’ll be plenty of wine and beer to enjoy them with.

Our Executive Chef Nick Hodges has been delivering chef demos at the Falmouth Oyster Festival since day one. On the Friday, he will be cooking up a storm at 2pm, and at 7.30pm he’ll compete in this year’s rematch in the “Hot Chef Challenge” culinary battle with Arty Williams.

20TH – 22ND OCTOBER: FALMOUTH BEER FESTIVAL, PRINCESS PAVILLION, FALMOUTH

Where: 8 minute taxi ride from the hotel or 25 minute stroll

Tick off more than 200 of the most mouth-watering real ales, ciders and perries – and for any tender heads the next morning, our brunch menu is the perfect cure.

We’re big fans of the talented folk at Rogue Theatre, and once again this is a spectacle not to be missed. Designed for brave adventurers of all ages, this wickedly wonderful Halloween celebration will tickle your ribs, thrill your spirits and chill your bones. With a wild blend of imagination, magic and macabre humour, the show mixes live music, storytelling and dance. Blankets, warm outfits and wellies (as well as fancy dress) are encouraged.

On the Thursday and Friday, you’ll also be able to join the Pendennis team on an eerie evening tour for an after-hours journey back into its wicked past. Meet spine-tingling storytellers and discover tales of ghostly apparitions, dastardly deeds, and ghoulish goings-on.
